<image:title>Updates - Novella Challenge: Post-Derby Thoughts - How it Went</image:title>
<image:caption>Taking part in the Derby was a really nice way to get more comfortable on the RS discord server, but for me personally it was also a really nice way to try out a different genre. I don’t often write Romance, and the cover that I had lent itself nicely to a Fantasy with a Romantic subplot, so away I went! Drafting Sealkeeper was actually a lot easier than I expected it to be - partly because I was lucky enough to have been matched with one of my top picks, and partly becuase I was in a really good mental space for writing this summer. The hard part came when I had to do developmental edits. Usually, i would give myself a month or two as a break before diving back in to edit a story, but I didn’t have that luxury on this project. The endless cycles of write, edit, beta, repeat got very tiring towards the end, so I didn’t end up with much energy left for marketing. What I Learned I thrive on deadlines, even when (or maybe because) the stakes are low. There was nothing to lose if I didn’t finish this project. Nobody was holding a knife to my throat, or threatening my income. I voluntarily signed myself up and got myself exicted about the project, and it worked! Sealkeeper has become one of my favourite stories I’ve written so far. True, I say that about all my stories and I love them all…. but it’s my favourite. For the time being, at least.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - “Find Your Stone” Out Now - My story features in issue 5 of Gwyllion Magazine</image:title>
<image:caption>Nos Calan Gaeaf Hapus! A double magazine whammy this month, as my folk horror tale “Find Your Stone” appears in issue 5 of Gwyllion Magazine. This story takes the legend of Y Ladi Wen (the White Lady) and pits the supernatural figure against two hapless teenagers in a graveyard. Always a good recipe for Halloween! Gwyllion Magazine is one of the only Speculative Fiction magazines created and edited in Wales, and even more special, it’s bilingual! Every month features a piece in Welsh, and whilst I certainly don’t have the talent to write in Welsh (maybe some day!) I count myself lucky to have my story included with them. “Del, what are those rocks about? I’m dyin’ to know?” “Well, Cai, there’s an old tradition; every year, on Nos Calan Gaeaf, families gathered around a fire and wrote their name on a pebble. Then, they threw it in the bonfire and danced the night away.” “Are you trying to get me to strip again, Del?” I wheeze a laugh; the viewers love that. “You check in the fire once it burns down. You’ve got to find your stone, or Y Ladi Wen—Welsh for ‘The White Lady’—will steal your soul before the year is out.” Get ‘Find Your Stone’ now</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - “A Cup of Empathy” Out Now - My story features in issue 10 of Wyldblood Magazine</image:title>
<image:caption>“A Cup of Empathy” came to me during breakfast at our local cafe. “What if a coffee shop could serve emotions” I thought. What might that look like? We’re already so dependent on something as simple as coffee to function (wait, that’s everyone right, not just me?) so if we could lliterally buy liquid focus, how would that change our society? From that came two ideas—the first being this story, following Connie’s day as a Barista at Emotive, and her glimpses of the darker side of her society. And from there came another idea—Emotiv—a serial novel I’ve been working on for many months. I’ve had this story on submission since I started expanding it into a novel, but I’m so happy it’s finally found a home, and so proud that Wyldblood chose to publish it. “Plain Gratitude, no whip.” The patron glares through his bushy eyebrows. My eyes flick automatically to their bracelet—black stripe, one dash. I bow in respect and tap the order screen between us. “Would you care for an extra shot of Empathy, sir?” “No.” Well yeah, that tracks. It’s a shame, too—we had a fresh batch of Empathy today. I enjoyed a small cup earlier—my only employee perk. Frank subs us a free daily drink, so long as it improves our performance, but they’re usually the cheaper varieties. I like Empathy; it helps me get a feel for the client’s mood. Sometimes I’ll take a shot of Vigilance if it’s been a really rough night. Get ‘A Cup of Empathy’ now</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Wyldblood 10 to include “A Cup of Empathy” - My short story will be published in Wyldblood Magazine’s tenth issue, 19th October</image:title>
<image:caption>I have a list of publications on my laptop, entered into a spreadsheet (naturally), sorted, filtered and including a whole lot of data regarding my submissions. One column reads “Dream Pub?”. Wyldblood Magazine’s entry has a firm YES entered in the corresponding cell. I came late to the world of sci-fi & fantasy magazines. Most of my reading from my teens to adulthood has been exclusively novels and collections published traditionally. But since I started submitting earlier this year, I jumped in feet-first. Wyldblood repeatedly impressed me with both its selection of stories, and the variety. I’m so proud to say that I have a story included in their next issue. Connie is a barista at Emotive, where she serves emotions in liquid form. Her daily duties are repetitive, if unusual, but something sinister is brewing under the surface… “Hey, Connie. Same as usual, with an extra shot today, please?” Large mug, steaming hot oat milk, two shots of Fulfilment. I stare at the surface, transfixed as the purple-mauve syrup mingles and combines with the milk. I hide behind machinery and inhale the steam. I always do this with Jerry’s order, hoping to absorb even a hint of the satisfaction he’s about to consume. I remind myself that Fulfilment never used to come in barrels. How did anyone get by–what could they possibly have back then that made them feel this way? I inhale deeply, and a warm tingle rushes down my neck. <image:title>Updates - “Tom Cat” and “Negative Image” Live Now - My horror drabbles feature in “Nom Nom: Hallowe’en Dark Drabbles” from Black Hare Press</image:title>
<image:caption>Originally appearing in my drabble collection, One Hundred, “Tom Cat” and “Negative Image” were written during a daily writing challenge earlier this year. “Tom Cat” explores the daily life of a man and his adoptive stray cat, though he seems rather keen on tin can traps… “Negative Image” is a second-person minute of creepiness. Can you resist checking over your shoulder? I’m really pleased that the good folks at Black Hare Press chose these drabbles to be reprinted in their monster anthology! It’s available for sale now! Night photography is a gamble at the best of times, and most of the results from yesterday’s experiments turned out… so-so. But one stops you in your tracks. Zoom in, and a man stands in negative image, like a light shines from within him. He’s smiling. Get your copy of Nom Nom: Hallowe’en Dark Drabbles now!</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - “Payload” Live Now - My horror drabble features in “Dark Moments” from Black Hare Press</image:title>
<image:caption>“Payload” was written from the prompt provided — ‘100 ways to stop a zombie apocalypse’. How would it end? There are so many hundreds of zombie stories out there, and I will never stop having fun thinking up more, but this was a different sort of challenge. Often when I write about zombies, I focus on the middle of the problem (Walking Dead style), not the last actions of survivors or, worst case scenario, the final victims. I’m so proud to have this piece alongside the other stellar drabbles in ‘Dark Moments’. Be sure to give them a read if you stop by! The last city sprawls below—a hodgepodge of rooftop slums. With the deafening thump of helicopter blades pounding in my skull, I radio the pilot. “Target below. Keep us steady.” Read ‘Payload’ for free on Dark Moments</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - “The Sigh of a Shrieking Puff” Now Available - My story features on the latest edition of Del Sol SFF Review</image:title>
<image:caption>“The Sigh of a Shrieking Puff” follows the misadventures of a space explorer, called a ‘Visitor’, who is tasked with searching planets and moons for evidence of life, and cataloguing them. I was heavily inspired by the video game No Man’s Sky, wherein players explore a fictional universe and, among other activities, can earn credits for their discoveries. It led me to wonder - if humans were paid just for finding a species, how quickly would they become nothing more than a commodity to us? (Even more so than present day.) And then I began to wonder; what would happen if a Visitor, high on success and greedy for more, would stumble into the wrong habitat… Excerpt: I take my handheld scanner and lift my prize up to the sensor, waiting for the readings to tick on the screen. The blob pulses at me, an eye swivelling in a slimy socket. —Specimen Scanned— A hologram of the critter hovers in front of me, a faithful reproduction, detailed and crisp. —Record Specimen Name— Sol's sake. How can they expect me to think up a unique name for every stray I find? Read ‘The Sigh of a Shrieking Puff’ for free on Del Sol SFF Review.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A short while ago, Bag Of Bones Press’ SJ Townend put a tweet out with a funny pun: “An anthology of second person, present tense horror, titled, Well, that was tense!” And of course, writers being the weird bunch we are, everyone convinced her to do it. Not only did we end up with one anthology, but two! (Quite fitting, no?) My story, ‘Criminal Indications’, follows the traumatic experiences of pregnant women in a near-future society, where prenatal scans don’t only check for signs of illness… I’m so grateful to be included in this anthology alongside such talented names as: Lindz McLeod, Warren Benedetto, Matt Bliss, Catherine McCarthy, and Micah Castle! <image:caption>My fellow millennials may remember ‘Knight Rider’, a gloriously cheesy tv show starring the one and only David Hasselhoff in the eighties and nineties. The biggest appeal of this show was a sentient car—half vehicular James Bond, half Batmobile—called KITT, who played partner to Hasselhoff’s Michael Knight. I was too young to appreciate the Hoff’s bare-chested glory, but KITT was fascinating to me. I’m still entranced and horrified by the prospect of self driving cars and AI sentience. I explore this in “Ride of Your Life”. Read it now on Sci Fi Shorts!</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - “One Hundred” — Coming Soon! - Big news, everyone! I’m publishing my first ever collection</image:title>
<image:caption>Let me set the scene for you: It’s February 2022, and I’ve just dipped my toes back into writing fiction after an incredibly long hiatus. I have a tendency to get really hyper-focused on a project, so it followed naturally that I found myself on Medium, Wattpad and other writing websites. They were full of challenges and new writers to befriend. I came across a challenge started by Zane Dickens on Medium called ‘The 100 Story Challenge’. The premise was simple—write a hundred fiction pieces in one hundred days. Participants were free to come and go as they pleased, take breaks, and set the rules for themselves. It wasn’t a contest, just a challenge to write more regularly. Liking the sound of it so far, Zane. Let’s make things more interesting, shall we? Tell one hundred stories in one hundred days, using exactly one hundred words per story. Ah, yes, now that sounds like a challenge that will infuriate me and make me question my sanity.</image:caption>

The Cŵn Annwn are hellhounds of Wales, hunting alongside Arawn, God of the otherworld, during the Wild Hunt. Hearing their howls would foretell your inevitable death. But the louder their bark, the safer you are; they get quieter when they approach! I had so much fun writing this Drabble for Drabbledark II. This anthology has eighty stories in total, all told in 100 words. Perfect for a coffee break read. I'm so proud to be included in this Table of Contents with so many talented writers. It's a privilege to have my writing posted alongside so many talented voices. "Rise and Shine" was inspired by a sunny morning, waking up in bed to a gorgeous view outside. I count myself lucky enough to have woken alongside my husband, and we were, radically enough, happy to wish each other good morning. It made me wonder - how will this look in the future? Would there be a way someone could purchase this kind of happy bond? What problems might arise from that sort of arrangement? To find out more, you can read my drabble now! Martian Magazine issue 5 is available in eBook form right now. My drabble will be published on the site in June - I’ll keep you updated!</image:caption>

After attending Dartington College of Arts in the early 2000s, she gave up on writing for a long time, focusing instead on her family life and career opportunities. She currently indulges her love of numbers and spreadsheets in her day job as a bookkeeper.</image:title>
<image:caption>In her free time, Ria enjoys writing short stories, dreaming up novel ideas, and reading other upcoming authors’ pieces. She most enjoys Science Fiction, Speculative and Literary Flash Fiction, as well as having a concerning blog addiction.</image:caption>
